It was a cold blustery day in February 40 years ago. The beautiful bride was anxiously waiting in the basement of the small country church in a floor length gown she had sewn herself, with the help of her mother and grandmother. She would carry a bouquet of white roses, white daisies and baby’s breath.
The groomsmen wore light blue tuxedos with black lapels, black bow ties and ruffled shirts.

Extravaganza. It’s a big word. It was also one of my first big mistakes in an ad. I was a newbie, a green horn, just out of college, working at the Hannibal Courier-Post in the early 1980’s.
I designed a full page advertisement for a local furniture store. The headline included the word “extravaganza” in all caps the width of the page.

Since today is Valentine’s Day I want to confess to you that I’m in love with my wife, Connie. I have been for over 30 years. Because I adore her I treat her like the lady she is.
In many ways, I’m old fashioned. I hold the door for her when I can. When we eat out I’ve been known to hold her chair as she sits down. I love to hold her hand and just be with her.
I learned a long time ago that if you want an eight-cow wife you need to treat her like an eight-cow wife.

I grew up in town within walking distance of the newspaper. From ages 10 to 15 I either walked, ran or rode my bike everywhere I needed to go. This included anywhere in town and four to five miles outside town to go swimming or fishing.
Something happened to those modes of transportation when I turned 16. They were no longer needed because I had use of an automobile.

It has been stated that the oldest profession is prostitution. But that is a misnomer. The oldest profession is actually sales. In the beginning it was the snake who sold Eve on the idea of eating the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden.
Like my father, sales is the profession I chose.
It was my uncle Tom Warden who “toiled in the vineyard of words known as community newspapering.”

On Nov. 29 our managing editor, Dave Marner, was in St. Charles attending a speech by President Donald Trump. Why did he go? Because Dave loves to take pictures of the President. When the president is that close and it’s not a Monday or Tuesday (our deadline days) why not go?
