‘Chief Ahna’ opens Relay

Ahna Rasmussen hugs Owensville City Marshal Robert Rickerd on Saturday during the Relay for Life of Gasconade County opening ceremony after he presented her with a donated American Beauty Special Edition Henry .22 caliber rifle. Ahna, 11, is currently undergoing treatment for a reoccurrence of Papillary thyroid cancer and served as “Chief for a Day” on Friday. Rickerd and Owensville Police Department members took her on tours of local businesses and schools in a custom-made police uniform which included a model Glock pistol donated by the manufacturer. She helped present $2,350 raised by police for the Relay for Life campaign. The campaign has collected $21,970 as of Tuesday and up to $23,000 in donations was expected to be turned in by participating teams, according to Ashley Hale with the American Cancer Society. OPD Sgt. Scott Griffith and Sheriff John Romanus are also pictured. Cancer survivors and their caregivers take a lap around Buschmann Park to begin the evening’s events.
