Barbecue nets $2,235 for local boy with cancer

A June 16 barbecue at the Owensville VFW Hall put on by Dustin Turner’s friends raised $2,235.61.

Dustin, who was diagnosed with the bone cancer Osteosarcoma, had surgery June 13 at Children’s Hospital, according to Deborah Donatti whose children were among those helping with the event.

“The best news was that Dustin was released from Children’s Hospital today, and arrived home just in time to accept the proceeds of the benefit in person,” said Donatti following the project which had support from Thrivent and Walmart. “Thank you to all who supported Dustin.”

And, she noted, the winner of a 50/50 cash drawing, Megan Hengstenberg, donated her winnings back to the Turner family. Hengstenberg’s family recently received a converted van to assist them in transporting their young daughter who requires the use of a wheelchair.
