Belle man charged with felony DWI following fatal crash

VIENNA, Mo., — Tanner Schroeder, 23, of Belle, has been charged with the class C felony alleging driving while intoxicated resulting in the death of another, stemming from a December crash when Matt Nilges, 27, of Bland was killed.

Schroeder has also been charged with the class A misdemeanor of operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner involving an accident, and failure to wear seat belt, an infraction. He is scheduled for arraignment on Feb. 27.

The accident occurred in the early morning hours of Dec. 9 at the junction of Highways 89 and 28 when Schroeder was driving a 1997 Jeep Wrangler and traveled off the right side of the roadway, striking a sign and a ditch. The vehicle overturned, ejecting both occupants. Schroeder was airlifted with serious injuries and Nilges was pronounced dead at the scene.
