Bland Middle School student loses life in ATV crash Sunday

A 12-year-old boy from Bland died from injuries received in a Sunday afternoon ATV crash on Maries County Road 317, three miles north of Route Z. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol report filed on the 2:41 p.m. Oct. 1 incident, Dalton M. Newton, was operating a 2016 Yamaha ATV northbound on the county road when he failed to negotiate a curve. The ATV went off the left side of the road, struck a fence post, and overturned. The Bland Middle School student was ejected from the ATV. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP report filed by Sgt. Steven W. Cunningham.

The youth was transported by ambulance to Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla where he was pronounced dead at 4:03 p.m. by Dr. Evan Cameron.

Grief counselors have been made available to students and staff at Bland Middle School. Area school districts including Linn, Rolla, Owensville and St. James have assisted Maries R-2 School District staff by sending counselors to meet with students.

The school district canceled home middle school basketball games on Monday, Tuesday and the middle school boys basketball game on Friday at Cuba.

Newton’s fellow students have asked if they can have an in school memorial service, such as a balloon release. The staff at Bland Middle School are working with the students of the seventh-grade class to plan an appropriate tribute this week.

Visitation will be held Friday, Oct. 6, from 4 - 8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 7, from 1 - 2 p.m. at First Christian Church of Belle. 

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m., at First Christian Church of Belle. A complete obituary will be posted at a later date.
