Bland motorist seriously injured Tuesday in U.S. 50 crash near county line

Daniel L. Hiles, 61, of Bland, was flown by ARCH helicopter ambulance from Gerald to Mercy Hospital St. Louis on Tuesday morning after he drove off U.S. 50 a tenth of a mile west of the Gasconade County line and struck a mature shag-bark hickory tree, auto-rotated and overturned. The 2014 Chrysler 200 he was driving westbound came to a stop on its wheels and airbags throughout the car deployed. Hiles was wearing a seat belt but suffered serious injuries including head lacerations. The crash was reported at 10:40 a.m. and a witness following Hiles told Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies he was driving erratically as he crossed into Gasconade County, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Bruce Baker. Gerald-Rosebud firemen and Gerald ambulance staff attended to Hiles. Miller Salvage towed the car.
