Boy shot while getting out of deer stand Sunday morning near Berger

An accidental shooting was reported to Franklin County Sheriff’s Department at 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 26.

A deputy responded to the scene near the 1000 block of Sauer Ford Road near Berger. Personnel from the New Haven/Berger Fire Department and the Hermann Ambulance District also responded.

They found a nine-year-old boy with a gunshot wound in his right shoulder. He was in a wooded area on a large farm.

Sheriff Steve Pelton reports that investigators learned the victim was in a tree stand with his father and a family friend. As they were leaving the stand, the boy handed the loaded shotgun down to the friend who was at the base of the stand. The butt end of the gun struck a rung of the ladder causing the firearm to discharge, shooting the boy in the shoulder.

The child was transported to St. Louis Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is assisting with the investigation.
