Rural Gerald farmer Jason Kopp’s corn harvest season was in full swing last week as he shelled off rented fields off Route ZZ near Pin Oak Road along the Boeuff Creek. Kopp said his yield was averaging around 135 bushels an acre in these fields including one which has remnants of the original gravel road which farmers used to cross the creek upstream of the current bridge’s location. Kopp said market prices for corn were down to around $3 a bushel following recent announcements of tariffs against China although he managed to sell some locally for as much as $3.20 a bushel. The recent tariffs, and a high national surplus of corn from 2017, is keeping prices down, he noted.
