UNION — Falling 4-2 earlier in the season on the road at St. Clair, John Bunch’s Owensville Dutchgirl softball team got a shot at revenge last Wednesday afternoon in the opening game of the MSHSAA Class 3, District 10 Softball Tournament at Union High School.
Nursing a 5-4 lead through five innings, OHS saw the Lady Bulldogs tie the game in the top of the sixth before a RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning by St. Clair eventually ended their season by a final score of 6-5 in eight innings.
“Our girls have battled and competed hard in several close games this year,” Bunch said. “I believe the experiences we had this year will help us in the offseason and next fall.”
Falling behind 4-0 going to the bottom of the third inning, Owensville (8-11) began to chip away at St. Clair’s lead with a two-out rally.
Walks to Ella Wright and Kaylee Abney along with an Anna Finley single loaded the bases for freshman hurler Addy Wright.
Helping her own cause, the Dutchgirl freshman cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double trimming St. Clair’s lead to 4-3.
Another two-out rally ensued in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Katelyn Landolt was hit by a pitch and later scored on an Ella Wright RBI single before a Finley fielder’s choice RBI scoring Caelie Horstmann gave OHS a 5-4 lead through four innings.
“We had the lead and simply couldn’t hold on,” Bunch said.
