Direct hit…BOOM!

A lightning strike reported at 7:43 a.m. Thursday ignited a fire on a detached garage owned by George and Linda Stratman. A neighbor, Bruce Paneitz, attempted to put out the fire with a garden hose which wasn’t quite long enough to reach adequately. Stratman also attempted to extinguish the blaze which resulted from a direct hit on his Hillcrest Drive property. Owensville City Marshal Robert Rickerd was running a stationary traffic patrol nearby on Krausetown Road and reported a loud and extremely close lightning strike.. Moments later the 911 call about a fire was placed, Rickerd said. Stratman and Rickerd managed to remove an ATV and lawn equipment from the garage. Owensville Fire Department volunteers responded and had the fire contained quickly despite heavy rainfall.
