Dutchgirl soccer defies Mother Nature

With rain looming in the distance, Jordan Palmer’s Owensville Dutchgirl soccer team opened their season Friday night at Dutchmen Field against St. Clair’s Lady Bulldogs in Four Rivers Conference (FRC) girl’s soccer action.

Aside from a few second-half showers, both teams stayed relatively dry.

Playing nearly 20 minutes of scoreless soccer, OHS surrendered two first-half goals in a :38 second span before falling to the visiting Lady Bulldogs 9-0 Friday night.

Freshman goal keeper Luci Angell saved three shots to open the match before St. Clair’s Chloe Merseal scored two goals at the 25:53 and 25:15 mark of the first half respectively.

Owensville’s best shot at finding the back of the net came later in the half.

Destinee Busenhart went on a breakaway only to be denied by St. Clair goal keeper Kenzie Schmidtke at the 12:50 mark of the opening half.

Lady Bulldog goals later in the half by Haley Buscher, Leah Hill and Merseal left OHS trailing 5-0 at halftime.

Netting a hat trick in the first half, Merseal scored her fourth goal of the game with 35:43 left in the match.

Seeing the Lady Bulldogs leading 9-0 with 13:33 left, Angell turned away three St. Clair shots denying them a mercy-rule victory on the road.

In a one-half junior varsity match during a driving downpour, both Owensville and St. Clair played to a scoreless tie.

OHS will return to action tomorrow (Thursday) on the road against Union at 5 p.m.
