One day removed from their win of the season over Steelville at Owensville Elementary School, Ryan Flanagan’s varsity Dutchgirl basketball team went for their second victory in as many night last Tuesday welcoming Father Tolton Regional Catholic’s Lady Trail Blazers to Gasconade County.

Deadlocked at 8-8 three minutes into the game, Owensville went on to score the next 27 points before going on to defeat their opponents out of Columbia by a final score of 86-57.

Trailing 3-0 out of the gate, a pair of Breanna Diestelkamp three-point plays along with a Destinee Busenhart bucket gave Owensville an 8-3 lead at the 5:50 mark of the first quarter.

Seeing their lead vanish just under a minute later, Diestelkamp put the Dutchgirls right back in front with a bucket at the 4:40 mark of the opening quarter.

Closing the first period on a 15-0 run, the Dutchgirls got points from Anna Finley (5), Diestelkamp (4), Kate Angell (3) and Stephani Elliot (3) to take a 23-8 lead into the second quarter.

As Tolton continued to go cold from the field, Owensville stayed on fire in the first few minutes of the second stanza.

Scoring nine of the next 12 Dutchgirl points, Diestelkamp sparked a 12-0 run to open the second quarter and balloon the OHS lead to 35-8 with 4:53 until halftime.

Jaida Rudkin snapped Owensville’s string of 27 unanswered points with a bucket at the 4:40 mark of the second period.

Trading points with the Lady Trail Blazers the rest of the half, OHS went into the locker room with a 52-22 halftime lead.

Diestelkamp surpassed Father Tolton as a team with 24 first-half points.

Outscored 18-11 in the third quarter, Owensville was led with four points from Katelyn Landolt helping the Dutchgirls take a 63-40 lead into the final eight minutes.

Putting up a baker’s dozen in the fourth quarter, Breanna came with four points of equaling her older sister’s OHS single-game scoring record of 41 points by finishing with a game-high 37 markers.

In the victory, the younger Diestelkamp moved ahead of Kati Davis (1,237 points) into second place on the all-time Dutchgirl basketball scoring list behind her older sister Hailey.

After Diestelkamp in double figures for the Dutchgirls was Elliott with 11 points followed by 10 each from Finley and Angell.

Finley flirted with a triple double by adding 10 assists, eight rebounds and five steals to her 10 points.

Landolt nearly made it five double-figure Dutchgirls netting nine points.

Anna Skornia chipped in five points to go along with Busenhart’s first-quarter bucket for two points.

Senior Ella Wright added a fourth-quarter free throw for one point while freshman Keira Hendrix netted her first varsity point on a free throw with 41.7 ticks remaining.

After finishing the week out in the Peoples Bank Holiday Classic at Sullivan High School, the varsity Dutchgirls will end the 2018 portion of their season on Monday, Dec. 17 as part of a varsity doubleheader with their Dutchmen counterparts at Fulton against the Lady Hornets with a 6 p.m., start time.

JV Dutchgirls vs. Tolton

Falling to Steelville the night before, Hannah Wehar’s junior varsity Dutchgirls looked to close the 2018 portion of their season on a winning note against the Father Tolton JV Lady Trail Blazers.

Down 6-5 after one quarter, Owensville won the next three quarters to post a 49-31 victory over their opponents out of Columbia.

Kayden Wood gave the Dutchgirls an early 2-0 lead on a bucket at the 4:46 mark of the first quarter.

A Leah Reed basket and a Keira Hendrix free throw helped OHS trail by just a single point after seven minutes of basketball.

Kyla Hendrix and Angell both hit a 3-pointer each in the second quarter joining the first-half scoring column and helping the JV Dutchgirls to an 18-14 halftime lead.

Spanish foreign-exchange student Elena Ortega and Olivia Vandegriffe both had two points as part of a 6-0 run to end the third quarter for Wehar’s JV Dutchgirls.

Leading 33-24 going into the final seven minutes, Owensville more than doubled the Lady Trail Blazers 16-7 to end the 2018 portion of their season at 1-2.

Doing most of her damage in the first half, Reed led the JV Dutchgirls with a game-high nine points.

She was followed closely with eight points apiece from Keira Hendrix and Wood. Six of Wood’s eight markers came in the fourth quarter.

Cami Gray netted all seven of her points in the second half. Vandegriff also scored all six of her points in the second half joining Kyla Hendrix also with six markers.

Angell (3) and Ortega (2) rounded out the JV Dutchgirl scoring against Tolton.
