Dutchmen wrestlers fall in FRC opening meet with Union, St. Clair

Opening the Four Rivers Conference (FRC) portion of their season last Tuesday on the road, Rod Barndollar’s Owensville Dutchmen grapplers paid a visit to St. Clair to take on the host Bulldogs and Union’s Wildcats.

Able to post victories in five matches against St. Clair, OHS fell to the host Bulldogs by a team score of 48-28.

St. Clair’s Cody Armistead wrestled uncontested at 106 pounds while both the Dutchmen and Bulldogs were both open at 113 pounds.

In the first contested match of the dual, Owensville senior Austin Angell was pinned in 1:03 by Bulldog grappler Dalton Thompson in 1:06.

Caden Moss earned OHS’ first win of the night wrestling unopposed at 126 pounds.

Going up against a returning state placer in Jason Landing (St. Clair), Dutchmen freshman Kolby Jahnsen was pinned in 3:15 by the Bulldog wrestler at 132 pounds.

At 138 pounds, OHS sophomore Tighe Bombach was pinned in :40 by St. Clair’s Bailey Gardner.

Winning the first contested match of the dual for the Dutchmen, senior Dustin Jahnsen pinned Bulldog grappler Trenton Balderson in :23.

With Cooper Bombach recovering at home from mono, Owensville was open at 152 pounds giving St. Clair’s Ryan Herman a walkover victory.

Needing the entire six minutes, Dutchmen junior Blaine Schoenfeld won his first FRC match of the season.

Winning a 10-2 major decision over St. Clair’s Grant Bay, Schoenfeld earned the victory at 160 pounds.

Looking for two Dutchmen wins in a row, Tanner Rector hit the mats at 170 pounds for Owensville.

Lasting nearly two periods, Rector won his match by fall over Bulldog wrestler Randy Simpson in 3:21.

OHS senior Caleb Gray earned a walkover win at 182 pounds.

Trailing 30-28 following Gray’s win, Owensville saw the host Bulldogs claim the last three matches to take the dual.

Senior Colton Moore fell to Aaron Herman at 195 pounds in 3:05 while freshman Dakota Martin made it to the second period with St. Clair’s Josh Richards before being pinned in 2:49.

Dutchmen senior Bryce Mistler just missed reaching the third period of his match before being pinned by Evan Barnes at 285 pounds.

Junior varsity Dutchmen wrestlers scoring win by fall against St. Clair included Boston Belk, Owen Holtzer and Cody Linders. Joe Bauer was pinned in his JV match.

Dutchmen vs. Union

Starting their dual with Union’s Wildcats at 145 pounds, Dustin Jahnsen went for his second win of the night.

Pinning Wildcat grappler Sarena Moore in :50, the elder Jahnsen left St. Clair with a pair of wins.

Union’s Daniel Rowedder earned a walkover win at 152 pounds to even the dual at 6-6.

Schoenfeld notched his second victory with a win by fall in :32 over Christophe Poinsett at 160 pounds.

Going for another victory at 170 pounds, Rector took on Union’s Ryder Kuenzel.

Making the Wildcat wrestler go the entire six minutes, Tanner dropped a 13-4 major decision.

Gray was also denied a second victory losing by fall in 2:53 to Union’s David Clark at 182 pounds.

Going for a split of his two matches, Moore took on Union’s Haiden Meyer at 195 pounds.

Pinned in 1:04, the Dutchmen senior will have to wait until 2018 for another shot at a victory.

Midway through the third period of his second match, Martin scored a win by fall in 4:55 over Union’s Steven Sanders at 220 pounds.

Mistler needed all three periods to win a 7-0 decision at 285 pounds over Wildcat wrestler Connor Ward.

Union’s Dominick Beine (106) and Brendan West (113) both wrestled uncontested.

Nearly getting to the second period, Angell lost by fall in 1:58 to Wildcat grappler Carter Sickmeier.

Moss made it two wins in St. Clair with a win by fall in :43 over Union’s Megan Klick.

Locked in a tight match with Joshua Wegescheide, Dutchmen freshman Kolby Jahnsen narrowly dropped a 10-9 decision.

Tighe Bombach also fell 9-0 in his match with Union’s Jordan Waldman. UHS took the dual, 47-27.

Belk won his JV match against Union while Linders and Bauer were pinned in their JV bouts.
