Giant Pumpkin

Dr. David Groenke, along with a couple of helpers, hauled a large pumpkin from his dentist office on Main Street to his truck waiting outside the front door Friday (right). The Atlantic Giant pumpkin, which he grew on his farm on Shotwell Road, was headed to Pumpkin Palooza, which was held in downtown Washington Saturday. The pumpkin tipped the scales at 237 lbs. The top three winning pumpkins (below, from left) and their growers were Groenke’s brother, Dale Groenke with the first place pumpkin weighing 342 lbs., Frank Friese with his third-place 203 pounder, and Groenke who took second prize. Groenke said he and his brother usually vie for first and second places at the annual event. He reported that the largest pumpkin he has grown so far weighted in at 426 pounds.
