Herbert Benton

Herbert James Benton, 83, Gerald, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018, at St. James VA Home.

He was born Feb. 26, 1934, to James Leslie and Martha (Bray) Benton, in Gerald.

He was united in marriage to Bernice Lorraine Alleman, May 2, 1955, in Lead, S.D.

Herbert was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Gerald. He served in the U.S. Army receiving the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, two Over Seas Bars and Good Conduct Medal. Herbert served as Gerald fireman, fire chief, and was on the Gerald-Rosebud fire district board. He served as city of Gerald alderman, mayor and municipal judge; vice-president of Franklin County Municipal League; life member of VFW. He was a member of Gerald Lions Club and served as vice-president. Herbert was a Gerald business man for 20 years and also a Gerald Countryside Manor board member.

He was preceded in death by parents, James and Martha; brothers, Earl and Leroy Benton; and sisters, Sylvia and Dorothy Mae Benton.

He is survived by wife, Bernice, of the home; children, Marion Bearden and Mike Hillary of Donovan, Ill. and Herbert James Benton Jr. and wife Abena St. Luce of St. John’s, Antiqua; brother, Glenn Benton and wife Wanda of Strain; sister, Ann Seba and husband Clifford of Troy; grandchildren, Michele Brendel and husband Jeffrey of Sullivan, D.J. Eberlin and wife Kimberly of Rosebud and Andrew Benton and Ana Benton both of St. John’s, Antiqua; and great-grandchildren, Ty, Abrial and Makayla Brendel and Mallory, Carson and Evan Eberlin.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 6,  at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Gerald with Pastor Glenn Hollander officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery with full military honors.
