Larry Smith

Larry Smith, 77, Owensville, formerly of Gerald, died Thursday, March 1, 2018, at his home.

He was born May 24, 1940, to William Henry Adam and Elsie Margaret (Boeck) Smith, in St. Louis.

He was united in marriage to Luella Mae Goettling, June 27, 1964, at Zion Lutheran Church, Owensville.

Larry served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1961 as a vehicle and tank mechanic and reserves until June 24, 1964. He was a maintenance electrician retiring from Hostess Bakery in St. Louis. As his sons grew, he was active in the Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Explorer Scout programs of Troop 448, Gerald. He was also active in church activities serving as a deacon, session member, clerk of session and church commissioner to Presbytery meetings and in a youth group of Boeuff Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by parents, William and Elsie; parents-in-law; sisters, Ruth Stiritz and husband Harold, and Loretta Smith; brothers, Wilber Smith and wife Charlotte and Sonny Smith who died in infancy; daughter-in-law, Jana Shore Smith; brothers-in-law, Zeno Angell, Charles Brandhorst, Roy Angell, Herbert H Goettling Jr., and Harvey Allen Snodgrass; granddaughter, Emily Mae Huggins; and several nephews, nieces, cousins and a great-nephew.

He is survived by wife of 53 years, Luella, of the home; siblings, William Smith and wife Bernice; sisters, Jeannie Angell and Anna Mae Brandhorst Angell, all of Gerald; sons, Jeffrey Smith and wife Kim, Owensville, James Smith and wife Becky, Gerald; daughters, Sara Grube and husband Kevin, Gerald and Linda Huggins and husband Jeff, Iowa; grandchildren, Tony Grube and wife Kim, Heather Kerr and husband Gabe, Jo Erika and Jessie Smith, Grant and Garrett Wood, Becky Huggins, Laura and Jason Bigley, Regina Grube, J.D. and Wyatt Smith; great-grandchildren, Savanna and A.J. Grube, J.J. and Gracie Bigley and JosieKaye Kohler; sister-in-law, Verna Snodgrass, Owensville; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

By his request, his remains were cremated. Visitation will be held Saturday, March 10, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Gottenstroeter Chapel, Gerald. A Celebration of Life will follow with Rev. Ron Koppelmann Jr., officiating. Luncheon will follow at Boeuff Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private at a later date.
