Quilt of Valor presented during Veterans program

A program to honor area military Veterans was held Thursday morning, Nov. 9, at Gerald Elementary School. An enthusiastic student body plied the vets with patriotic songs, hand made cards and other tokens of their appreciation. This year, a Quilt of Valor was presented to U. S. Navy Veteran John Colombo who was unable to attend due to illness. Mike Stillman, Commander of VFW Post 6133, accepted the quilt on behalf of Colombo. The quilt was made by the women’s quilting group at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Beaufort. They were represented by Caroline Lindsey (next to Stillman) and Janet Meyer. Quilts of Valor is a nationwide organization whose mission is “to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” Students were asked to dress in red, white and/or blue for the program. Many wore special patriotic hats they made themselves. Following the program, fifth-grade students walked to Legion Park to visit the Veterans Memorial there. Teachers explained the various service flags on display and students examined the names etched into stone of those that served.
