R-2 athletes make strong showing in Special Olympics

Gasconade County R-2 School District students were among more than 800 children participating in the Gasconade County R-1 School District’s Special Olympics track and field meet on Friday at Hermann High School’s Bearcat Memorial Stadium. Perfect weather greeted Special Olympians from more than a dozen schools. R-2 students (in yellow team shirts this year) parade down the track during the opening ceremony. Donations topping $10,000 were given to help support the event and Lions Club members from Owensville and Hermann helped prepare and serve food to assist Masonic Lodge No. 123 members from Hermann with their portion of the project to serve the athletes, chaperones, and fans. Derrick Tyree, a speech implementer for the district, high-fives student Carter Niederholtmeyer following the opening ceremony.
