Teen charged in county drug case; LANEG serves Bland warrant

A Leslie teen is charged in a felony Gasconade County warrant alleging delivery and possession of a controlled substance after sheriff’s deputies answered a call Monday for a suspicious vehicle on a commuter parking lot in Owensville.

According to Sheriff John Romanus, Richard W. Nelms, Jr., 18, was taken into custody after a vehicle matching the description in the report was linked to him. Deputies obtained consent to search the vehicle and “located and seized (a) substantial amount of marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms,” according to Romanus in a release issued Tuesday afternoon.

A warrant issued Monday charged Nelms with a class C felony count alleging delivery of a controlled substance and a class D count of possession of a controlled substance. His bond was set at $15,000 cash or surety and an arraignment was scheduled for today (July 11).

An attorney representing Nelms filed a plea of not guilty on his behalf and requested a continuance through electronic filing. Kevin A. Richardson also filed a waiver of formal arraignment on Nelms’ behalf.

Nelms was also charged with a Class A misdemeanor count for possession of drug paraphernalia.

On July 5, deputies investigating a reported domestic assault in the 800 block of South Hickory Lane outside Owensville came in contact with a resident of a mobile home park. A physical altercation ensued, according to Romanus and a male suspected was “tasered and taken into custody.”

The man was transported to the Crawford County Jail in Steelville following a medical evaluation and treatment. Charges of assaulting a law enforcement office were still pending as of Tuesday evening.

Also on July 5, sheriff’s deputies, members of the Lake Area Narcotics Enforcement Group and Bland police executed a search warrant at a residence in Bland. One white male and one white female where taken into custody for possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute.

During the course of the investigation a substantial amount of marijuana, U.S. currency, and a firearm were seized, according to Romanus. Both suspects were transported to and held at the Crawford County Jail pending formal charges being issued.
