Union volunteer charged with providing porn to a minor

On Feb. 20, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of a minor receiving pornographic images according to a release from Sheriff Steve Pelton. Specifically, a minor was sent pornographic photographs and sexually explicit comments from an adult through electronic means.

The minor’s mother located pornography and comments on her child’s cellular phone. She then contacted authorities.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office learned the suspect knew the victim as a volunteer at the Union School District, through other local organizations and social media. The suspect had contact with the victim from November 2017 to February 2018.

Charges through the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office have been issued on Thomas W. Abbott for furnishing pornography to a minor. His bond was set at $20,000.

Pelton says the investigation is ongoing. He encourages parents and/or guardians to talk with their children regarding internet safety, especially through social media.

If anyone believes their child/minor has had contact with Abbott in an inappropriate way, please contact the Sheriff’s Office to file a report. Their non-emergency number is 636-583-2560.
