When the 2009-10 academic year at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., commences, three former Dutchmen will either be hitting the baseball diamond or the hardwood for the Lions.

Hayden Brown will be lacing up his cleats for Doug Bletcher’s Lions on the diamond while DeBroeck and Schlottach will help first-year Lion basketball coach Brad Soderberg through his first season in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC).

“Hayden was an important part of our success during the spring,” Dutchmen baseball coach Casey Fisher said. “He helped us win several of our 17 games with solid performances using his bat or his arm on the pitching rubber.”

Named to the Class 3, District  6 All-District Team, the Dutchmen senior compiled solid numbers at the plate and on the mound.

Pitching in seven games and starting five, Brown threw complete game efforts in two of his outings. In 39 innings pitched, he allowed 33 runs with just 13 of those earned to give him a 2.33 earned run average (ERA). Brown also allowed 49 hits with 10 doubles, a triple and four home runs. His overall record was 4-3 and he struck out 43 batters while just walking seven.

At the plate, Brown had 67 official at-bats and had 28 hits to give him a batting average of .418. Out of those 28 hits, he had 20 singles, five doubles, two triples and a home run to help him towards his 20 runs batted in. Brown also scored 37 runs, drew 21 walks, stole 12 bases, struck out 12 times and committed only six errors throughout the season.

“Hayden is a very welcome edition to Lindenwood and the Lion baseball program,” Lindenwood head coach Doug Bletcher said. “He’s also a fine student and solid citizen. That is very important to us and we feel we have found a ‘diamond in the rough’ in Hayden.”

After spending a year as a Viking at Missouri Valley College, former Dutchmen Dustin DeBroeck has decided to transfer to Lindenwood University to continue his basketball career at the next level.

“It will be nice to see Woody (Schlottach) again after being away at Missouri Valley for a year,” Former Dutchmen guard Dustin DeBroeck said. “The thing that drew me to Lindenwood was their academics and their location on St. Charles, Mo.”

One setback for the soon-to-be Lindenwood Lion is that he will have to sit out a year due to transferring within the HAAC.

During his senior year as a Dutchmen, DeBroeck racked up some solid numbers.

Throughout his 25 games, he scored 399 points and averaged 16 tallies per contest. Shooting 46 percent from the field, DeBroeck shot 54 percent inside the arc and 35 percent from three-point land. Among the team leaders in free throws, the 2008 OHS grad shot 79 percent from the charity stripe.

Coincidentally, Schlottach will be joining him. He will be trying to become a Lion on the hardwood as a walk-on.

“What drew me to Lindenwood was that I already had a lot of friends that I knew on campus,” Lindenwood freshman-to-be Woody Schlottach said. “I was also impressed by the looks of their campus and their business program. It also helps to be rooming with a former teammate (Dustin DeBroeck).”

Dutchmen basketball coach Josh Vinyard wishes he had Schlottach for another year or so.

“As his senior year went on, Woody just kept getting better and better on the hardwood,” Owensville boys basketball coach Josh Vinyard said. “He is a hard worker and he had a lot of potential ahead of him at Lindenwood. I hope for nothing but the best for Woody as he continues his basketball career.”

Woody’s numbers during his senior year helped the Dutchmen attain their first 20-win season in over a decade.

One of four Dutchmen to finish in double figures, Schlottach scored 254 points to average 10.6 tally marks per contest. His shooting numbers were also solid. He fired 51 percent from the field which included a 55 percent clip (75/136) from two-point land and a 40 percent mark from the land of three (20/50).

Schlottach also was among the team leaders in free throws by shooting 72.1 percent from the charity stripe (44/61).

Defensively, his numbers were also among the team leaders for the Dutchmen. Pulling down 175 rebounds, the 2009 OHS grad averaged 7.3 boards per game, dished out 2.5 assists per contest and recorded 1.38 steals per game.
