City aldermen reject county sheriff’s patrol proposal on 4-0 vote PDF Print E-mail

After meeting for 10 minutes Monday, in closed session with the city’s elected marshal, Owensville aldermen voted 4-0 not to pursue a proposal from Sheriff Randy Esphorst who offered to provide contracted law enforcement services by the county.

Ward 1 Alderman Brian Esptein’s motion came after the board met for about 25 minutes on their own after meeting with Chief Robert Rickerd, said City Administrator John Tracy, speaking for the board.

Rickerd said he was glad for “some closure.” Esphorst was disappointed he did not have a chance to present the plan in person to the board. The board meets with MoPEP officials in a special closed session at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

I'm not a big Rickerd fan...but I feel that the people of OWensville should be
able to have protection within their own city. The Gasconade County Sheriff's
office has too much on their hands to try and "do it all". That's why we
have a PD. Let them do their job. If they aren't doing it, then the mayor can
step in and make them accountable. But you're still paying for
protection..whether it's from the PD or the Sheriff's Office.

Rickerd went to the local business owners and sold his side of the issue and in
turn they called the city and made their complaint.. Regardless, Rickerd only
cared about his job and not what was best for the citys finances. They should
have let the Sheriff present his plan to the full board.

I agree with the earlier entry. It would be nice to see Esphorst's plan,
regardless of the outcome by the vote. Maybe he had some good ideas that the
current police department could use. The idea is to save money, but not get rid
of the police.

I am not sure what would be best, to keep our current law enforcement or to
accept the Sheriff's proposal. But I would have liked to see more debate and
information pro and con. Our aldermen rejected this proposal too fast. What was
the hurry?? I would have liked to see the details of Esphorst's plan.
