New Haven’s Kathleen Scheer captured her third consecutive FRC Player of the Year honor as she led New Haven to the Class 2, District 4 championship game which they lost to Clopton 70-42. For leading St. James to an undefeated run through the conference, Lady Tiger skipper Brad Conway was selected FRC Coach of the Year. Over on the boy’s side of the ledger, DeBroeck landed on the All-FRC 1st team after being selected honorable mention last season. The Dutchmen senior led Owensville by scoring 399 points for an average of 16 points per game. During the 2007 portion of the season, DeBroeck was perfect from the free-throw line as he hit his first 27 free throws attempts before finally missing one during the 2008 Owensville Tournament. DeBroeck ended up going 75-for-95 from the charity stripe for a 78.9 percent clip. He also shot 46 percent from the field which included a 52 percent clip from inside the 3-point arc and a 35 percent showing from behind the 3-point line. He also pulled down 45 rebounds and recorded 21 steals and assists in his final season in an Owensville Dutchmen uniform Garnering a selection on the All-FRC Honorable Mention squad was Dutchmen sophomore Matthew Jett. During his first full season of varsity action, Jett accumulated 275 points and averaged 11 points per contest. Also posting potential all-conference numbers was Dutchmen senior Matt Angell. Despite missing seven games to an injury to his hand, Angell still managed to score almost 200 points this year and average about 11 points a game. He also near 47 percent from the floor and over 76 percent from the charity stripe on the season. For leading St. Clair’s Bulldogs to their second consecutive district title, Bulldog head coach Bart Denbow was selected FRC Coach of the Year while St. Clair senior Jordan Flora was named FRC Boy’s Player of the Year. St. Clair won the Class 4, District 4 Tournament by edging Sullivan’s Eagles 59-57. They went on to defeat Lutheran South in the sectional round before falling to Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau) for the second year in a row in the state quarterfinals. Youth showed its dominance on the All-FRC girl’s team as only five seniors made the list between the first teamers and honorable mention players. 11 of the players named to either the first team or honorable mention lists were either freshmen or sophomores. Hopes for a FRC team in Columbia rest on either Ray Steinhoff’s New Haven Shamrocks or Todd Anderson’s Hermann Lady Bearcats as both teams play in sectional action tonight. Both the boys and girls All-FRC teams and boy’s All-Academic FRC teams can be seen on page 16 of this week’s Gasconade County Republican. Honorees for All-FRC wrestling can also be seen on page 16.
