Owensville Elementary School fourth-graders in Lori Nolen’s class assembled Valentine’s Day cards for a Haitian earthquake relief project, “Hearts for Haiti” which coincided with an economics lesson to benefit the Meds & Foods for Kids project in St. Louis. ![]() OES students have ‘Hearts for Haiti’ through Valentine card project
Valentines will be sold at upcoming basketball games, the school’s Living Museum on Thursday, and a local church for $1 and $2 (personalized with a photograph). Meds & Food for Kids “makes a fortified theraputic food product in a factory in Haiti and dispenses it to their children,” according to a release from students in the class. “The factory uses Haitian workers and products grown in Haiti.” An assembly line was in full swing this past Thursday as students prepared two separate styles of cards. A team of advertising specialists were busy preparing posters announcing the sale. Those were placed around the school by the week’s end. Nolen said their economics lesson comes from learning about supply and demand, design, and entrepreneurship through sales. As of Tuesday, the class had raised $318 toward their goal of $500.
