With the middle of March approaching, that can only mean the start of the Spring sports docket for Owensville High School athletes is nearing.![]() Dutchmen sophomore Matthew Jett shows how to field a ground bal during baseball practice at Memorial Field Monday. OHS track and field, baseball and golf will all begin their seasons on Tuesday, March 18. Dutchmen golfers were originally supposed to start their season on Monday, March 17, at Cuba. However, that match was cancelled due to a scheduling conflict and no makeup date has been set as of press time. Despite graduating four seniors, with one of them being ‘07 state qualifier T.C. Farrar, Kori Hoffmann has 12 golfers out for the 2008 season. Three golfers joined the team after playing different sports last season. They include Hayden Brown (baseball), Tyler Griffith (baseball) and Dustin DeBroeck (track). Golfers returning from last season include Clay Ahlfeldt, Ethan Biles, Anthony Hamann, Brett Schaeperkoetter and Ethan Warden. Hitting the links for the first time include Chad Hopkins, Colton Lenauer (younger brother of ‘07 OHS grad Caleb Lenauer), Cy Moritz and Mitch Schultz. OHS golf will open their season with a triangular match at Owensville Golf Course against Sullivan and Steelville with tee time set for 4:15 p.m. In his last season as Dutchmen baseball coach, Greg Williams will field a mixture of young and veteran players. Replacing four graduated seniors from last year (Andrew Jett, Will Pounds, Cody Saebens and Anthony Gooch) will be current seniors Brandon Howard, Brett Nelson, Coleman Schaefferkoetter and Seth Weber. Other varsity returners from last season include Matthew Jett, Ethan Joers. Owensville’s youth will be strong throughout the season as 19 of the 27 players out for baseball are either freshmen or sophomores. Dutchmen baseball will open their season at St. Francis Borgia on Tuesday, March 18, and will return to Memorial Field for their home opener on Wednesday, March 19, against St. Clair’s Bulldogs. A 4:30 p.m., first pitch is slated for both games. Other games at Memorial Field to watch for include showdowns against Class 1 State Champion New Haven (Thursday, March 27) and Class 3 runner-up Sullivan (Monday, March 31). Both of those games also start at 4:30 p.m. Numbers for Matt Candrl’s OHS track teams have increased from last year as nearly 100 students are out for the high school team while close to 60 OMS students are running track this season. Despite being decimated by graduation from last season, Owensville’s track team has a mixture of young and veteran athletes that will compete hard from meet to meet. OHS track will begin their season at St. Clair on Tuesday, March 18, while the OMS tracksters will start their season on Thursday, March 27 by hosting a quadrangular meet on the track at Dutchmen Field. Starting time for the high school meet will be 4:15 p.m., while the middle school meet will start at 4:30 p.m.
