One of these 13 Owensville High School coeds will be crowned next Thursday evening as the queen of the 22nd annual Springfest, which originated as the Tulip Festival. A 7 p.m. coronation ceremony is scheduled April 17 in the high school’s large gym. Instead of the traditional winding of the maypole by fourth-graders at Owensville Elementary School, students n that class will perform the “Missouri Waltz.” Amy Estes said conflicts with scheduling practice times during the day in the school’s gym, in use throughout the day for physical education classes, was one reason the maypole winding is not being presented. She also said the gym was in use in the mornings and afternoons as far back as January for middle school basketball and more recently for volleyball. Participation was also down since many parents were unable to get students to the school for morning sessions or pick them up after school. Estes said she hopes to present the traditional maypole event next year if physical education classes can be scheduled so maypole winders all have a class together so they can practice during the day. She has rehearsed with the students previously during her scheduled daily planning period. This event kicks off a weekend celebration of Spring which includes a downtown festival on Saturday. A Little Mr. and Miss Springfest Contest is scheduled at 11 a.m. April 19 on First Street which is sponsored by the Gasconade Time Association car club. The club is hosting a car show throughout the day. Contestants in the Springfest Queen contest will undergo an interview with a panel of three judges prior to the coronation ceremony. They will be judged on a written application including community and school involvement, personal recommendations, and reasons for wanting to be the queen. During their interview with the judges, they will be scored on their appearance and grooming, and personality and self expression. Their written application counts for 40 percent of their score with 60 points possible from their personal interview. Candidates include: • Hillary Haase, 18, daughter of Howard and Ruth Haase, Gerald, is sponsored by the Owensville School Math and Science Club.
