For the first time in known history, Owensville High School will have three athletes going to play the same sport at the same college.

Seth Weber rounds first base during his final game as a Dutchmen against Pacific at Memorial Field back in May. Brett Nelson snares a line drive in Summer Legion action during a tournament at Washington’s Ronsick Field. New Haven is sitting at 6-5 overall and 6-2 in District nine play after dropping a 10-2 decision to Washington at New Haven Monday night.

St. Louis Community College (SLCC) at Meramec’s Magic will have three additions to their roster in the form of Brett Nelson, Brandon Howard and Seth Weber.

Nelson’s senior season as a Dutchmen was cut short by a knee injury suffered early in the year.

“It feels good to be swinging a bat this Summer after getting injured during my senior season,” Meramec freshman-to-be Brett Nelson said. “I’m looking forward to playing two more years with Seth (Weber) and Brandon (Howard). We’ll also be rooming together during school and we’ll start our search for an apartment within the next week.”

During his four-year career as a Dutchmen, Nelson’s best season had to be his junior campaign. He led Owensville with a team-high batting average of .431 and had a .532 on-base percentage and .692 slugging percentage to go with it.

Nelson was no stranger to the basepads that season as he racked up 28 hits which broke down to 17 singles, seven doubles, two triples and two home runs. He also collected 17 RBIs. He was also a nightmare for opposing catchers as he swiped 22 bases as a junior.

In his sophomore season, Nelson also broke the .400 barrier by batting .410 with a career high 34 hits in 89 official-at-bats. He also recorded racked up a .424 on-base percentage along with a .578 slugging percentage during his second year in the orange and black. His hitting numbers were solid as he scored 21 runs, produced 21 singles, five doubles, three home runs and 17 RBIs. Nelson also walked once and stole eight bases during his sophomore campaign.

During his current Summer season with New Haven Post 366, Nelson is batting .389 with a .488 on-base percentage and a .417 slugging percentage. As of press time, Nelson is tied for the team lead in hits with Howard as they have 14 apiece. Out of those 14 hits, 13 of them have been singles with the other being a double. He also has eight RBIs which is good for second on the team.

Known for his versatility on the diamond, Brandon Howard will be joining Nelson next Spring as a member of the SLCC-Meramec Magic.

“We didn’t want to go anywhere far away and we already had friends over there anyway,” Meramec freshman-to-be Brandon Howard said. “It’s been good getting to play with them this Summer and I’m looking forward to two more years with Weber and Nelson at Meramec.”

As a freshman under longtime Dutchmen baseball coach Bill Seamon, Howard saw 11 plate appearances and crossed the plate three times.

“I had the privilege to coach these young men as 9th and 10th graders,” Former Dutchmen baseball coach Bill Seamon said via e-mail. “I can say they always did every thing I asked of them on the field. I would like to congratulate them on this opportunity and wish them good luck as they experience college baseball.”

He saw more playing time as a sophomore where he batted .238 with 15 hits in 63 official-at-bats. Howard also cranked out a .351 on-base percentage to go with a .254 slugging percentage.

Playing as a junior, Howard surpassed the .300 mark at the plate by recording a .316 batting average with 12 hits in 38 at-bats. He also recorded a .409 on-base percentage and also had a .342 slugging percentage during his third year on a high school diamond.

Hitting wise, Howard recorded 11 singles, a double and seven RBIs. He also picked up five walks and three stolen bases during his junior campaign.

Howard’s breakout season was his final one in a Dutchmen uniform as he led the team with a whopping .477 batting average with 21 hits in 44 at-bats. He also led the team with a .558 on-base percentage and a .636 slugging percentage.

Of his 21 hits, Howard had 16 singles, four doubles and a home run. He also had a team-high 12 RBIs. Howard also earned six walks and swiped a team-high nine stolen bases.

Howard’s current Summer numbers at New Haven are amongst the team leaders.

He leads the team with a .412 batting average out of which he has 14 hits in 34 at-bats. Of those hits, Howard has 12 singles and a team-high two triples to go with a team-high 14 RBIs.

On the pitching rubber, Howard is currently 2-0 with a minuscule 0.88 earned run average (ERA) In 16 innings pitched, he has only allowed two earned runs, nine hits, five walks and has struck out seven batters. Opposing hitters are also batting only .158 against him. That’s good for second on the team.

Former Dutchmen catcher Seth Weber rounds out the magical trio that will be playing college baseball for SLCC-Meramec.

“I’m excited about getting to play with Brett (Nelson) and Brandon (Howard) for two more years over at Meramec,” Former Dutchmen catcher Seth Weber said. “I was planning on going somewhere else, but I found out they were both going so I figured I’d join them since they were rooming together anyway.”

Weber’s career as a Dutchmen took off during his junior campaign when he recorded seven hits in 40 at-bats for a .175 batting average. He also had a .327 on-base percentage to go with a .225 slugging percentage. Among those hits, Weber had five singles and two doubles which helped him record 10 RBIs and score seven runs.

During his senior season, Weber proved he was one of the most dangerous catchers in the Four Rivers Conference and the area.

He batted .275 during his final year as a Dutchmen and found ways to hit and get on base with a .408 on-base percentage and a .450 slugging percentage. Weber also collected eight singles, a double and two home runs during his senior year. Those helped him score seven runs and drive in 11 to tie him for second on the team.

Weber’s arm also proved lethal as he caught several runners trying to steal bases along with picking runners off of first base.

Competing with numerous talented athletes on New Haven’s senior legion team, Weber has managed three hits in 16 at-bats for a .214 batting average. His three hits have led to two RBIs and two runs scored.

New Haven manager Brian Abbott has been more than happy with the production given to his team from the addition of the Owensville players.

“I can’t complain about their effort game in and game out,” Abbott said. “They’re all good ball players and they’ve helped our team with their solid play throughout the Summer.”
