Playing on one Summer baseball team is hard enough. Playing for two Summer teams and having a job takes dedication and a passion for the game of baseball.

Incoming Owensville senior Ethan Joers fires a pitch for Coach Lay’s Summer Dutchmen during June action. Joers will wrap up his first season with New Haven’s Senior Legion team sometime this month.
One incoming Dutchmen senior took the time and the effort to play for two Summer baseball teams.

Ethan Joers, a left-handed hurler that will likely be a key pitcher for Owensville this Spring, took on the daunting task of playing for his high school Summer team and for New Haven’s Senior Legion Post 366 baseball team. New Haven starts District nine play Friday night.

“Although I’ve had games every night, I don’t mind it because I’ve been having fun play for Coach Lay and Coach Abbott,” Incoming Dutchmen senior Ethan Joers said. “Both coaches have similar styles and like to be aggressive on the basepads. That’s something I don’t mind and both have been very beneficial this Summer.”

Throughout the month of June, Joers played with his Dutchmen teammates under OHS assistant baseball coach Kevin Lay.

“Ethan (Joers) was a valuable asset to our team both with his bat and his arm,” Summer Dutchmen coach Kevin Lay said. “There were several games this Summer we wouldn’t have been in without his arm or bat.”

Joers is also making an impact on New Haven’s Senior Legion team upon moving up from the Junior Legion team last year.

“I wish I could get him more playing time,” New Haven manager Brian Abbott said. “With the amount of talent on the team this year, it’s hard to get someone that just moved up from junior to senior legion a lot of playing time.”

In limited playing time for New Haven, Joers has a batting average of .429 with three hits in seven at bats among 13 plate appearances. Joers’ three singles have led to one run batted in (RBI).

With his arm, Joers has thrown in three games and compiled an 0-1 record with a 4.97 earned run average (ERA) allowing nine earned runs in 12 and two-thirds innings.
