Gerald Police Chief Clyde Zelch has returned from his year long tour as a police officer in Afghanistan. He has already begun the huge task of getting his department back in order.

Officers with the Gerald Police Department face a daunting task of restoring confidence in a department that has been marred by recent negative publicity. Department members (above, from left) include Gary Watson, Andrew Rosenkoetter, Clyde Zelch and Derrick Lewis.

Last week he made his second visit to Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke and Prosecuting Attorney Bob Parks. He asked both men for their cooperation in keeping Gerald safe and he vowed his in return. “We are a small town with limited resources and we need to get all the help we can,” Zelch explained. He noted that he expects to work more closely with the Franklin County drug task force in the future. All officials that he visited promised to do what they could to get the Gerald Police Department back on its feet.

Zelch faces a daunting task. “There is so much to do. My first priority is to get our reporting system back on track. We just got our computers back from the FBI. We need  to inventory what’s in the building now,” he said.

He has already met with the Board of Aldermen. He plans to meet with each business owner and as many residents as he can in the next few weeks. “I want to instill confidence in the Gerald Police Department. I want to show people we are improving every day,” Zelch says.

He plans to start walking a beat, as a good way to get out and make contact with the townspeople. “I hope to meet everyone in time, but it may take me awhile,” he laughs.

Oh, boy! The talk is gettin' good now. Back to basic rights again. I can't
believe how slick some lawyers are when addressing the so-called questionable
media about these law suits. This just goes to show you, they are 'only' doing
their jobs. Don't let this 'slippery' talk fool any of you. It's the walk, baby,
not the talk. And the walk is gonna be priceless; so, I think, people should
really start thinking hard about what's to come.
As far as paper-like Clyde,
with all respect, Mr. Zelch, like ALL of us, is just another human being who
probably is, if you ask him, not perfect. Has he done anything he's not proud
of? Don't know. Ask him.
I do know that when I used to go to school there, the
police could be a little intimidating to people, like myself, at the time, using
their legal capacities to garner attention from young females. This was very
scary.
But, I guess, things like this happen everywhere. Heck, on another
level of authorial power, I even forgave the principal's son for cheating off me
in class all the time; and I'm sure he'd gladly accept. I won't mention what the
super's son & I tangled about, because, still, we eventually became good
friends.
Sorry to meander. One last thing: scum. What does this mean? Can you
rehabilitate 'scum'? Do you cultivate 'scum' or just attract it? Come on,
people, I kinda know how this town's thinking operates. Pretty scummy, but still
not totally offal! ;) I still think the 'scum' deserve their day in court and a
HUGE award. And if someone, such as K. Bacon, comes to do a movie? Let's hope
he/she does the town justice, because we know it's not all bad; but, you know,
right now, it's pretty bad.
