JEFFERSON CITY – For the second year in a row, Tour of Missouri bicycle
riders will get a glimpse of mid-Missouri’s scenic countryside as they
race along approximately 115 miles of area roadways. Riders will make
their way throughout Gasconade County on Friday, Sept. 12 and Saturday,
Sept. 13, during Stages 5 and 6 of the weeklong professional cycling
event which encompasses most of the state.
According to a press release from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), the race route includes state highways and city and county streets. MoDOT wants motorists to be prepared for rolling road closures that coincide with the location of riders during the race. This means that officials will close roadways before the first cyclist reaches the area and roads will remain closed until the last cyclist goes through an area. Motorists should expect some delays during this time and consider using alternate routes to their destination or use the time to view this exciting event. The following is a look at some of the state highways that will be included as part of the race route in mid-Missouri.
This stage of the race will begin on Friday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. on Route 68 in St. James. Racers will finish the stage between 6 p.m., and 7 p.m. in downtown Jefferson City on High and Washington Streets. During Stage 5, riders will travel to Route B in Phelps County until they reach the community of Bland in Gasconade County. Racers will turn onto Highway 28 and stay on that highway until turning onto Route 42 after reaching Belle in Maries County. Highway 28 will be closed from Route B to the end of the Bland city limits for approximately one hour from 3-4 p.m. This information is according to Marshal Thomas E. Dodson of the Bland Police Department. Cyclists will continue on Route 42 through Vienna and turn onto Route 133. After reaching Meta in Osage County, racers travel Route B in Cole County through St. Thomas and Wardsville. Racers then proceed on Route M through Taos and cross U.S. 50 onto Route J, before making their way into the Jefferson City area on county and city roadways.
This stage of the race begins on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 12:30 p.m., in Hermann. Route 19 at 4th Street in Hermann will serve as the starting location for this stage and this portion of the highway will be closed from 7 a.m., until 3 p.m. Traffic will be detoured around this area and through downtown Hermann. Stage 6 will end between 4 p.m., and 5 p.m. on First Capitol Street in downtown St. Charles. In the mid-Missouri area, cyclists will travel Highway 100 until they reach Washington, Mo. During this stage of the race, riders will make their way to St. Charles as they travel through Dutzow, Augusta, Defiance and O’Fallon. Maps of the race route can be found at www.tourofmissouri.com or the public can access a link to their site by logging onto www.modot.org/central.
