During the top of the sixth inning against Washington’s summer Blue Jays, shortstop Dakota DeBroeck hit a three-run home run for the first round tripper in the short history of the Mavericks.
DeBroeck’s home run wasn’t enough as the Blue Jays knocked off the Mavericks in a 14-9 slugfest.
Starting on offense, the Mavericks didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard. Joel Littrell led the game off with a single and scored on a run batted in from DeBroeck for a 1-0 lead. Washington answered in the bottom of the first with a run on two hits and two errors to knot the game at 1-1 after one.
Bryan Landwehr got the Mavericks going in the second with a one-out walk. He stole his way to third base and scored on a RBI single from Littrell for a 2-1 lead. Littrell then scored on a RBI double from DeBroeck to keep the two-out rally going. Cuba’s Cody Spurgeon extended the inning reaching on an error as DeBroeck scored for a 4-1 lead. Kyle Bauer delivered the big hit of the inning with a two-run double to score Spurgeon and Gabe Hollander for a 6-1 lead.
That lead was short lived by the Mavericks.
Washington came up in the bottom of the second and turned three hits, two errors and two walks into six runs and a 7-6 lead after two offense-filled innings.
Both teams settled down and the scoring ceased until the bottom of the fourth inning.
Two hits later, Washington scored an insurance tally for an 8-6 lead as Landwehr relieved starter Alex Missey in the inning.
After a scoreless top of the fifth by the Mavericks, Washington pounded out four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning and turned them into four runs to take a 12-6 lead into the sixth inning.
Landwehr started the top of the sixth by reaching on an error and Littrell was hit by a pitch to set up a two on and nobody out situation for DeBroeck. During his next at bat, DeBroeck increased his RBI total to five for the game with a three-run dinger to cut Washington’s lead in half to 12-9.
In the bottom of the sixth, Washington got two of those runs back on one hit, two walks and a hit batter to take a 14-9 lead needing just three outs for the win on their home field.
Unable to string a seventh-inning rally together, the Mavericks fell to the Blue Jays by a 14-9 final score.
Missey took the loss for the Mavericks going four innings and allowing seven runs five hits with a strikeout.
DeBroeck led the offense falling a triple shy of the cycle while scoring twice and driving in five.
Dixon (Game 1)
Monday night in Dixon, the Mavericks were looking to break back into the win column and snap a four-game losing streak in the process.
During the opening contest of their doubleheader, the Mavericks snapped their losing streak with a 14-11 victory in the opening game.
Littrell, DeBroeck and Bauer all crossed the plate in the top of the first to help the Mavericks to a quick 3-0 lead. Dixon answered with three of their own in the bottom of the first to knot the game at 3-3.
DeBroeck’s second home run in as many games gave the Mavericks the lead back a 4-3 heading into the bottom of the second.
Looking to reclaim the lead, Dixon accomplished that and more. They turned five hits, a walk and an error into five runs and a 8-4 lead through two innings.
Beginning their march down the comeback trail, the Mavericks fought back with four runs in the top of the third.
Bauer led the inning off with a walk and later scored on a Tyler Ahring RBI single. Dylan Tripoli found the base pads by taking one for the team. That led to a game-tying two-RBI double from DeBroeck that scored Tripoli and Littrell to knot the game at 8-8.
For the third time in the game, the lead changed hands.
Dixon plated two runs on a hit and two errors to take a 10-8 lead through three innings.
Action cooled off until the top of the fifth inning. Littrell singled and scored on a RBI single from DeBroeck to cut the lead to 10-9 through five innings.
Sixth-inning action proved to be the breakout point for the Mavericks.
Bauer and Tate drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Bauer scored on a passed ball and Tate was drove in on a Landwehr RBI single to give the Mavericks an 11-10 lead. Ahring gave the Mavericks the lead for good with a RBI single to score Landwehr for a 12-10 lead. Ahring later scored on a RBI single from Littrell for a 13-10 lead.
Two hits led to another Dixon run and they cut the Maverick lead to 13-11 through six innings of highly offensive baseball.
Adding another insurance tally in the bottom of the seventh, the Mavericks held on to knock off Dixon in the opening game of their twinbill.
DeBroeck showed the way for the Mavericks with four hits, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Landwehr picked up the win in relief of Havelka by pitching the final four innings of the game allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
Dixon (Game 2)
Dixon salvaged a split of the twinbill with a 13-7 win in eight innings.
Action was wild in the top of the first as two Dixon errors led to two tallies for the Mavericks. Evan Farris (Bourbon) and Hollander both reached on errors to set up a two-out chance for Ahring. He cashed in with a two-RBI double to score both runners and help the Mavericks draw first blood. Dixon cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first with a run on two hits and an error to trail 2-1 after one inning.
Scoring for the Mavericks continued in the bottom of the second when Chad Hopkins walked and scored on a DeBroeck RBI double. Not stopping there, DeBroeck stole third and scored when Farris reached on an error. Hollander capped the scoring with a RBI single to score Farris and give the Mavericks a 5-1 lead.
Dixon got two runs back with help from a hit and a error to cut the lead back down to 5-3 after two frames of baseball.
As the Mavericks bats cooled off in the middle innings, Dixon continued to chip away at their lead. Single tallies in the third, fourth and two in the fifth gave Dixon a 7-5 lead after five innings on their home field.
Micah Tate started the top of the sixth for the Mavericks by reaching on an error. Tate scored on a Hopkins RBI single to cut the lead to 7-6 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Holding Dixon scoreless, the Mavericks needed just one tally in the top of the seventh to extend the game into the bottom of the inning.
A one-out single from Hollander turned into the tying run. Kris Havelka drove Hollander in with a fielder’s choice RBI to knot the game at 7-7 and send it into extra innings.
A six-run eighth inning by Dixon gave them a 13-7 victory in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
