BELLE — During the Maries County R-2 Board of Education meeting on Aug. 27, the children and sister of 13-year board member Amy Kiso accepted a posthumous service award on her behalf.

Kiso, who has served on the board of education since 2011, died on June 19 at her Bland residence after battling cancer sporadically for several years.

Board President Kenda Sanders presented the award to two of Kiso’s four children who were present, Garrett and Alaina Bledsoe. Kiso’s sister Lorie Kiso was also present. Braxton and Zach Bledsoe, Kiso’s older children, were unable to attend.

Sanders spoke about Kiso’s passion for the district and school safety for students and staff. She gave more than lip service. By taking action, Kiso made sure schools had a safe learning environment for students when she applied for a $400,000 safety grant on the district’s behalf. The grant was later awarded and used to update a variety of safety features in each building.

Sanders said she was grateful for Kiso’s 13 years of service to the district.

Superintendent Dr. Lenice Basham later agreed with Sander’s words.

“I really think (Kiso) cared about our students and staff, making sure this was the best school they could attend,” Basham said. “Making sure our students could be successful.”
