CHAMOIS — Tanner Mitchem, 26, of Chamois, was charged on June 5 with possession, resisting arrest by fleeing - creating a substantial risk of serious injury/death, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, exceeding the posted speed limit by 26 MPH or more, and operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner.

Deputy Andrew Koon noted in his probable cause statement that he observed Mitchem leaving a residence in Chamois. The deputy followed Mitchem on Hwy. 89 toward Linn. As Koon attempted to get closer to Mitchem, the latter accelerated to the point where the deputy could not keep up at 85 MPH.

The deputy activated his emergency equipment and continued to follow Mitchem but could not catch up, even when he reached his vehicle’s maximum speed of 103 MPH. Koon continued on Hwy. 89, believing Mitchem to be ahead of him; however, deputies coming from Linn did not see the suspect.

After driving east on Hwy. 50 for about five miles, Koon turned around and went back down Hwy. 89 toward Chamois. He located Mitchem’s vehicle near CR 203, at which time he again activated his lights and siren and pursued. Koon lost sight of Mitchem on Hwy. 89 near Hwy. 50.

Sgt. Dennis Sutton saw Mitchem on Hwy .50 heading toward Linn. He attempted to pull him over, along with Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Dustin Crofton and a Linn police officer. Mitchem finally pulled over at State Tech. Crofton stated that he could smell Mitchem’s tires and brakes as he approached Mitchem’s vehicle.

Mitchem was arrested for resisting by fleeing, careless and imprudent driving, and exceeding the posted speed limit.

Deputies conducted an inventory search before the vehicle was towed, at which time they found a loaded .45 caliber pistol in the glove compartment. Mitchem has a prior felony conviction and is unable to possess firearms legally.

Also located were two grams of methamphetamine and a glass smoking pipe containing residue.

Mitchem is being held at the Osage County Detention Center on a no-bond warrant. His court date had not been set as of press time.
