Fireworks display over Missouri River at flood stage

Hermann’s Riverfront Park was the scene of a fireworks display Friday evening after the Missouri River crested at 28.62 feet at 1 a.m. July 5 following a 4.39-foot rise into Saturday and a 6.39-foot rise Thursday into Friday. Heavy rainfall across the river basin this past week followed extensive flooding in Nebraska and Iowa on the upper Missouri and tributaries the previous week. The crest forced event organizers to move the community band performance from the community’s amphitheater to the high school due to Missouri River backwater flowing into Frene Creek which encroached onto the site. The lower parking lot at the riverfront was also under water. Additional rain was falling Monday into Tuesday which could extend localized flooding. The crest was the 33rd highest recorded by the National Weather Service.
