Hermann golf claims conference title, eyes districts next

The Hermann golf team capped off a terrific regular season this past Monday, April 29, with another dominant effort to take first place in an abbreviated Four Rivers Conference Tournament at Birch Creek.

Hermann captured the conference title with a team score of 211, comfortably ahead of the second place St. James at 226. Due to flooding at Birch Creek, the round was reduced to 12 holes and par was 47.

“Really proud of our team this year, we came in with high expectations and we met one of those expectations with winning the Four Rivers Conference,” Hermann head coach Jake Witthaus said. “Conference is always competitive, especially with being the smallest school, but our players kept working and getting better. They earned this championship.”

Trigg Lindahl led the way for the Bearcats, finishing with a three-under-par 44 that also put him in first place overall individually. He was one of only two golfers to finish under par for the 12-hole round in the tournament.

Easton Stiers shot a 52 to finish second on the team, followed by Nolan Brune’s 55, and EJ Lindahl’s 60 for the team’s counting scorers. Max Miller was close behind with a 62 to round out the whole team’s performance.

Despite the final score, it was not until later in the round that Hermann was able to pull away.

Hermann’s score on the front nine was just one stroke ahead of Union’s, 90 to 91, with St. James and Pacific both lurking close behind at 93 and 98, respectively.

Ultimately thanks to Trigg Lindahl’s three birdies on the back nine and the other teams chasing the Bearcats inability to keep pace, they slowly but surely pulled away to their eventual 15-stroke victory.

With the conference title now theirs, Hermann will turn to the next challenge in the Class 2 District 2 Tournament at Norwoods, a challenge coach Witthaus feels his team is up to.

“We have some experience at Norwoods Golf Course which will help our players,” he said. “We know it will be tough, but if we take advantage of the holes we need to and limit our mistakes then I think we will give ourselves a chance.”

The District Tournament is set for next Monday, May 6, at Norwoods Golf Club in Hannibal, MO.
