Let’s go camping

With the 2023-24 school year now in the rearview mirror, summer sports camps will be in full swing for Gasconade County R-2 School District athletes until the days leading up to the 2024 Gasconade County Fair.

Starting yesterday (Tuesday), Cullen VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchmen basketball camp will go through tomorrow (Thursday) with campers in grades fourth through eighth going from 4-6 p.m., while high school players will go from 6-8 p.m., with sessions for the high school players at Owensville Elementary School and for the younger group at Owensville High School.

Jamie Ridenhour’s Owensville Dutchgirl volleyball team will begin the June portion of camping season with their annual volleyball camp from Monday, June 3 through Wednesday, June 5.

Held in the Owensville High School main gym, youth camp for fourth through eighth graders will be held from 3:30-5 p.m., while high schoolers will hold their camp session starting at 6 p.m., each night at OHS.

OHS head track and field coach Matt Candrl will hold his annual summer camp from Monday, June 10 through Wednesday, June 12 at Dutchmen Field.

Campers entering fourth through sixth grades will go from 4-5 p.m., while campers entering grades seventh and eighth will hold their session each day from 5-6 p.m. High School camp will begin at 6 p.m., each night at OHS.

Hannah Koppelmann’s Owensville Dutchgirl softball team will be next on the camp docket going from Wednesday, June 19 through Friday, June 21 at OHS Field.

Those entering second through fifth grades with from 3:30-5 p.m., while campers entering sixth through eighth grades will go from 5-6:30 p.m.

Incoming high school softball players will hold their camp sessions from 6:30-8 p.m. each night.

Wrestlers and baseball players will kick off the July portion of the camp slate beginning on July 10-11 with a youth wrestling camp for interested athletes up to incoming eighth graders at 6 p.m., in the OHS small gym.

This camp will be conducted by Dutchmen head wrestling coach Dustin Howard along with his brother and newly-hired Dutchgirl wrestling coach Brandon Howard.

On Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July 12, Steven Kemp’s Owensville Dutchmen will hold a baseball camp for incoming third through fifth graders at OHS Field from 6-8 p.m.

Kemp’s camp for incoming sixth through eighth graders will be held the following week on Thursday, July 18 and Friday, July 19 also from 6-8 p.m., each night at OHS Field.

Gearing up for her first season as Dutchgirl head soccer coach, Kim McGee will hold her first camp from Tuesday, July 16 until Thursday, July 18 for incoming fourth through eighth graders at Dutchmen Field beginning at 6 p.m., each night.

Days prior to the annual Gasconade County Fair, John VanLeer’s Dutchgirl basketball team and Dustin Howard’s OHS youth football players will hold camp.

Howard’s camp for incoming fourth through eighth graders will go Monday, July 22 and Tuesday, July 23 beginning at 6 p.m., each night at Dutchmen Field.

VanLeer will hold a youth camp for interested girls entering fourth through eighth grade from Monday, July 22 through Wednesday, July 24 at OHS from 8-10 a.m. before incoming high school aged campers go from 10 a.m., until noon also those three days.
