Lindahl is Golf State Champion, Bearcats finish fourth as team

Trigg Lindahl claimed his second career individual Class 2 State Golf Championship Tuesday, May 14, while the Bearcats as a whole saw their position slide to a distant fourth-place in the final team placements.

Trigg took the top spot among Class 2 golfers after shooting a 76 in the first round on Monday, May 13, and then improving to 73 on Tuesday for a total of a five-over-par 149. His closest opponent came in eight strokes behind.

As a team, Hermann finished the first round in a three way tie with Willow Springs and Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau) for second place with a score of 341, trailing Palmyra’s first-place score of 333.

In addition to Trigg’s 76, Hermann found themselves with a shot at the State title after Monday’s round thanks to EJ Lindahl’s 87, Easton Stiers’ 88, Nolan Brune’s 90, and Max Miller’s 101.

However, the hopes for pulling closer to first place as a team slowly faded throughout the second round, particularly as Cole Camp – who had been sitting in fifth place on Tuesday morning – dramatically improved upon their first-round score by 28 strokes.

Cole Camp would end up winning the team championship thanks to their comeback, beating out Willow Springs by three strokes.

The Bearcats’ final team score was 695, good for a fourth-place tie with Notre Dame. They were 18 strokes out of first.

“We struggled with the pace on the greens and our approach shots,” Hermann head coach Jake Witthaus said. “Just had a few miscues that you can’t make at the state tournament if you’re going to win it.”

Despite not coming away with a team championship, Hermann’s fourth place finish is the culmination of a successful season that included both Four Rivers Conference and District championships, something coach Witthaus is certainly proud of.

“Very proud of how the season went,” Witthaus said, “Wasn’t how we wanted it to end, but still a great accomplishment.”
