Now that the calendar has turned over to May, regular seasons are winding down and area spring sports teams are preparing for district competition.

Placing second in their respective team standings Monday during the annual Four Rivers Conference (FRC) track meet at Hermann, Owensville’s Dutchmen and Dutchgirls will now shift their focus to Saturday’s Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 3, District 3 Track meet to be held at Montgomery County High School in Montgomery City.

Field events will begin at 9:30 a.m., while running events will start at 11 a.m., with both the boys and girls 4x800-meter relays.

Hermann’s Bearcats and Lady Bearcats will also be competing in Montgomery City alongside the Dutchmen and Dutchgirls.

Teams competing against Owensville and Hermann Saturday in Montgomery City include John Burroughs, Montgomery County, Orchard Farm, Principia, Priory, St. Charles West, St. Francis Borgia, Whitfield, Winfield and Wright City on the boys side.

Competition for the Dutchgirls and Lady Bearcats will include Montgomery County, Orchard Farm, St. Charles West, St. Francis Borgia, Ursuline Academy, Villa Duchesne, Visitation Academy, Winfield and Wright City.

Also Saturday is the annual Owensville JV Dutchmen Baseball Tournament.

Traditionally a four-team round-robin format, this year’s tournament will shift to a bracket-style event.

Action will begin at 9 a.m., with the host JV Dutchmen taking on Sullivan’s Eagles followed at 11 a.m., by the other tournament semifinal contest between Pacific’s Indians and Cuba’s Wildcats.

Following those two games, the two losers will play each other for third place at 12:45 p.m., while the two winners will play for the championship at 2:30 p.m.

Games will be five inning or 90 minutes in length whichever comes first.

A new inning will also not start after a game has reached one hour and 15 minutes in length.

Admission charges for the day will be $3 for adults and $2 for students with free admission for seniors and children under five.

Baseball season will wind down over the next week with Owensville having two more home games next week on Monday, May 6 against Steelville and Thursday, May 9 against Waynesville.

As of press time, there’s a strong possibility that senior night for baseball will take place when Waynesville’s Tigers visit OHS Field.

Owensville Dutchgirl soccer will conclude their regular season next week with a pair of road games at St. James on Monday and Laquey on Tuesday before competing in the MSHSAA Class 2, District 4 Tournament hosted by Helias High School in Jefferson City.

Wayland McKague’s Hermann Bearcat baseball team will enjoy four more home games at Dick Oschner Field starting with senior night tomorrow (Thursday) against New Haven in addition hosting Capital City and Hannibal on Saturday before a Highway 19 baseball showdown next Monday against Wellsville-Middletown.

Hopefully there will be some Star Wars music throughout the area this Saturday.
