St. Louis/Hermann collaboration provides wonderful performances at Showboat Community Theatre

HERMANN — Riverside Theatre Project, a collaboration between the Showboat Community Theatre, R-S Theatrics, of St. Louis, and Half Act Theatre Company, of Hermann, recently concluded a 10-show run of the Broadway classic “The Sound of Music.”

The Riverside Theater Project’s website says their intent is to “encourage thoughtful dialogue between both communities as we come together to make art.”

“The Sound of Music” was the first of what they hope will be annual productions, with half of the cast for each show from St. Louis and half from Hermann.

“This project will also provide theater education opportunities to local students and aspiring theater professionals,” the website further states. “We have implemented a mentorship program in which all of our designers and production team members will train a mentee.

“Mentees will gain practical experience working on a professional show, which will also act as a fabulous portfolio piece. It is our hope that in future iterations of the Riverside Theatre Project, mentees will take over as lead designers.”

The effervescent Maria was played by Molly Stout, who graduated with a BFA in Musical Theatre from Nazareth College in May 2023, and has performed in other productions in St. Louis. Nicholas Lane was an adorably engaging Captain Von Trapp. Lane graduated with a BFA in Acting from Lindenwood University in 2022, and has several stage and film credits. MacLean Blanner, an acting and musical theatre student at USC, was wonderful as Liesl Von Trapp, and Bryce A. Miller seemed to be a crowd favorite as Max Detweiler. Annabelle Jett, of Hermann, was perfectly cast as the shy Gretl Von Trapp, alongside her mother, Alicia, who played Ursula and her sister, Marian, who was a youth chorus member.

The show, which ran July 26 through Aug. 4, was engaging and well-executed, and Hermann is lucky to have this collaboration. Given the success of this year’s performance, next year’s should be eagerly anticipated.
