Vera Jean Thompson, 88, of Bland, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2024 at Gasconade Manor in Owensville.

She was born at home in Bland Dec. 15, 1935, a daughter to the late Victor and Bessie (Yoakum) Jett.

She was a 1954 graduate of Bland High School and a member of the Bland Baptist Church.

Vera was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Russell “Tom” Thompson Feb. 9, 1957, in Bland. He preceded her in death on Dec. 27, 2015.

Vera was employed at International Shoe in both Belle and Bland and retired from Lincoln University after 10 years as a payroll accountant. After retirement, Vera worked for the City of Belle and the City of Bland as a court clerk.

While at Lincoln, Vera took art classes and learned to draw which she enjoyed. She liked to cook and was known for her spaghetti and her chocolate sheet cake. Her hobbies included watching the Hallmark channel, as well as mysteries on the BBC channel and reading mystery novels. Vera was very social and loved visiting with friends at local restaurants, the grocery store or wherever she may have ran into someone she knew. She never met a stranger and could carry on a conversation with anyone. Vera was sassy, stubborn, and spoke her mind which is many of the things that made Vera special. Above all, her best times were spent with her family. She will be missed greatly by her family, friends, and anyone who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by husband of 58 years, Tom; son, Tommy Thompson; infant grandchild, Kelley Thompson; sister, Naomi Jett; and brothers, Louie, Herbert, and Delmar Jett.

Vera is survived by son, Rod Thompson and wife Brenda of Bland; grandchildren, Jamie Struemph and husband Jarret, Mitchell Thompson and wife Keisha, T.C. Thompson and wife June, Dane Thompson and wife Brooke, Tommi Campbell and husband Tyler, Brooke Goff and husband Taylor, and Brandy McDonald; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Riley, Jaseton, Adalynn, Dru, Shane, Ellie, Vivienne, Lainey, Hayes, Harlow, Tatyn, Bristol, Teddi and Amy; great-great grandchildren, Kingston and Abalynn; daughter-in-law, Debbie Thompson of Bland; sister-in-law, Wanda Jett; and brother-in-law, Bill Miller; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday (today), June 12, at Sassmann’s Chapel in Bland beginning at 10 a.m. with Bruce Elmore officiating. Interment will be in Countryside Memorial Gardens near Bland.

Expression of sympathy may be made to the charity of the donors choice.
