VIENNA — The race to become the next Maries County sheriff will no longer be decided in next week’s Republican primary election after an independent candidate signed up for the Nov. 5 general election.

Timothy “T.J.” Halle Jr., of Dixon, originally registered for the Republican primary for sheriff before dropping out in May. He filed to appear on the ballot in November. His opponent will be the winner of next week’s Republican primary.

Two other independent candidates filed to run in the election for Western District Commissioner. Ryan P. Davis and Patrick Kleffner, both of Vienna, will appear on the ballot in November. Their opponent, incumbent Democrat Ed Fagre, has announced his intention to retire at the end of his current term.

Because Fagre made his decision to retire after the deadline to remove himself from the ballot, Fagre can still win the election. If that happens, he plans to retire, which would leave the seat vacant in January when the new term begins. The governor would appoint a replacement.
