Public hearing for Gerald city limits extension set for tonight at Lions Hall

Posted

A public hearing on the proposal to extend the city limits of Gerald will be held this evening, June 5,  at 6 p.m. at the Gerald Lions Hall, 229 N. Bernhardt Ave.

This idea originated in the Planning and Zoning Commission in 2020. After years of research and discussion, the commission presented a recommendation to the Gerald Board of Aldermen in 2023.

Since then, the aldermen have worked closely with the city’s engineer, Terris Cates and representatives from MoDot to advance the project. A public hearing on the matter is required by law.

This extension of the city limits would apply only to highway right of ways. No adjacent property would be affected by the extension. If the proposal becomes a reality, any property owner whose property adjoins the right of way could voluntarily petition to be annexed into the city.  Citizens of Gerald would then vote on whether they favor the proposed annexation or not.

The proposed extensions would run north on Route Y to Wheeler Road, south to Antioch Road, west on U.S. Highway 50 to County Line Road and east to just less than one-half mile beyond Old Highway 50 and the west intersection of Klemme Road and the highway.

The mayor, the Board of Aldermen, the Planning and Zoning Commission, plus the city’s engineer, administrator and clerk will be at the hearing to present the facts and answer questions.
