Scheulen family wins new fair events

OSAGE COUNTY    In Osage County, the Scheulen name has been synonymous with pig farming, so it’s not surprising that several family members did well at the fair, with wins on both ends of the spectrum.

Emma Scheulen won the new “Over The Hill” event, which encouraged anyone who had shown swine at the Osage County Fair in their youth to enter the arena and compete.

It’s been a while since Emma did that. “It’s been every bit of 50 years since I showed animals at the fair,” she said, “But I wasn’t nervous. My grandson, Oliver (Bickell), walked with me around the ring, but I was controlling the hog.”

Emma did not show in her youth; instead, she waited until her kids entered 4-H and began showing hogs in the open category. “That was a way for me to support my kids and do it with them,” she explained.

She earned a horse-head cane hand-crafted by Joe Dudenhoeffer of Linn.

Jason and Shelby Kempker’s daughter, Sadie, 5, won the “Pee Wee” show with her hog named T-bone.

She admitted to being anxious during her first time in the ring. “I see pigs all the time, but showing in front of people I didn’t know made me nervous. I’m excited to win the event.”

She earned a medal with a pig, and all participants were treated to watermelon.

Shelby and her sisters showed at the fair every year, and Shelby and Chelsea took their animals to the state fair until they reached high school. At that time, they were too busy with other activities.

“We’ve done it since we turned 8,” said Shelby, adding she was not nervous for her daughter. “She worked with her cousin, Oliver. We had to get her used to it, but she will likely continue to show as she gets older.”

Oliver, 8, won the Novice Showmanship Award in his first year showing hogs. He entered the arena with his hog, Heavy Duty, adding he enjoyed the challenges of raising the animal and said it was rewarding to earn the award in his first attempt.

Everett Scheulen, 10, won the Junior Showmanship Award with his hog, Uno, in just his second swine project.

“I’m very proud of the family’s efforts,” Emma said. “4-H is a great organization, and raising hogs is a good project for the kids.”
