HERMANN — Jamboree football action last Friday night at Hermann High School saw some big plays made while exposing a lot of areas that need work prior to Friday’s home and season opener for Dustin Howard’s Owensville Dutchmen against defending Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 3 football state champion Central (Park Hills).
Action at Bearcat Memorial Stadium kicked off last Friday with the Dutchmen facing South Callaway’s Bulldogs.
Allowing three touchdowns early in their opening scrimmage of the night, Owensville quickly knew their defense needed to adjust.
“South Callaway is a good, well-coached football team that kept us honest,” Howard said. “After they recorded a few quick scores, we were able to slow them down the rest of our scrimmage.”
In spite of being kept out of the end zone against the Bulldogs, Owensville wasted little time finding pay dirt in their second-and-final jamboree scrimmage of the night against Linn’s Wildcats.
Able to find a hole and take off down the right sideline, senior running back Jaden Gerlemann scored on a 40-yard touchdown.
That play solidified him as not only a big threat on defense at linebacker after breaking triple digits in total tackles last year, but also on offense as a running back.
“Jaden has ran the ball harder than anyone on our team,” Howard said. “I’m really looking forward to seeing what he does to cap on outstanding Owensville Dutchmen football career.”
Also against Linn, sophomore Chase Crosby leaped high in the air for an interception which was the one of the highlights for the Dutchmen defense.
“Chase is one of those athletes that is a special talent,” Howard said. “He’s very coachable and I’m anxious to see what numbers he can put up as a receiver this fall.”
South Callaway will open their season this Friday night in their annual Callaway Cup showdown at home against North Callaway’s Thunderbirds out of Kingdom City.
Linn will open their first season of varsity football this Friday night with a non-conference showdown against Cuba’s Wildcats.
