ST. LOUIS — A wait well worth it.

That was the case Sunday in Father’s Day baseball action inside downtown St. Louis’ Busch Stadium between the Marceline Tigers and Owensville Dutchmen.

Even with the scoring contained to two innings, plenty of action unfolded before the orange and black broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run bottom of the sixth inning during their 6-4 victory over the Tigers from north-central Missouri.

“I’m proud of our guys for battling twice to take the lead and eventually win the game,” Dutchmen head baseball coach Steven Kemp said. “Any time you can get a win at Busch Stadium, it’s a great feeling.”

Chase Weirich got the start for Owensville and worked around a two-out walk in the top of the first inning to keep the game scoreless entering OHS’ half of the first inning.

After the Dutchmen were retired in order in the bottom of the first inning, Weirich pitched around another walk with one out in the top of the second inning keeping the game scoreless.

Becoming Owensville’s first base runner of the game, Weirich helped his own cause with a leadoff double.

Later in the inning, Jansen Loeb was hit by a pitch before Weirich advanced to third base when Logan Bailey flied out to right field.

An inning-ending strikeout left Weirich and Loeb on the corners in a scoreless game after two innings.

Marceline turned a hit, a walk and an error into a run in the top of the third inning.

Payton Gladbach singled and later scored when Cody Rodgers reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs giving the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.

That lead was short lived as the Dutchmen answered with four runs in the bottom half of the third inning.

Jaden Gerlemann and Matt Eckelkamp were both hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the third before a two-out rally ensued.

Zaiden Gates tied the game at 1-1 on a RBI single scoring Gerlemann before a Landon Kramme walk reloaded the bases for Weirich.

Reaching base for the second time in as many plate appearances, Weirich drew a bases-loaded walk giving the Dutchmen a 2-1.

Chris Allen kept the two-out rally going by reaching on an error allowing Gates to score and extend the OHS lead to 3-1.

Kramme capped the two-out rally by scoring on a passed ball leaving the Dutchmen with a 4-1 advantage after three innings.

Retiring the side in his final inning of work, Weirich kept Owensville in front 4-1 entering the bottom of the fourth inning.

Layne Evans reached base on an error with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning before stealing second and third base after Gerlemann was again hit by a pitch.

Evans was thrown out trying to score on a passed ball keeping Owensville’s lead at 4-1 after four innings.

Adam Wilson entered the game pitching the top of the fifth inning in relief of Weirich.

Working around a pair of walks in the frame, Wilson helped OHS keep their three-run lead intact entering the bottom of the fifth inning.

Retired in order, Owensville saw the momentum shift to Marceline’s side during the top of the sixth inning.

Matt Eckelkamp was now in the game on the pitching rubber during the top of the sixth inning.

Rodgers walked and scored for Marceline before Reece Svendsen did the same cutting the Dutchmen lead to 4-3.

Gage Teeter was then hit by a pitch and scored with two outs tying the game at 4-4 moving to the bottom half of the sixth inning.

With the game now tied, Eckelkamp became the pitcher of record.

Kramme led the bottom of the sixth off reaching on an error before Weirich drew his second walk of the game.

Two batters later, Loeb put the orange and black back in front with a RBI single scoring Kramme for a 5-4 Dutchmen lead.

Weirich would then score on a Bailey RBI single giving Owensville their final margin of victory.

That two-run bottom of the sixth inning helped Eckelkamp earn the win.

Retiring the side in the top of the seventh inning, Eckelkamp gave his Dutchmen offense a chance to add to their lead.

Wyatt Shaw led off the frame with a single before being retired on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Landon Ely.

George Vandegriffe then walked before the inning ended after a strikeout and a ground out.

Colton Skiles came on to pitch the top of the eighth inning with the end of the 2.5 hour time limit nearing.

Rodgers singled and Svendsen walked bring the potential winning run to the plate for Marceline in the top of the eighth inning.

Skiles proceeded to strike out the next three batters giving OHS a Father’s Day victory inside Busch Stadium.

Earning a no-decision, Weirich pitched four innings of one-hit baseball allowing an unearned run with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Eckelkamp earned the win in spite of allowing three runs and two walks to go with three strikeouts over two innings pitched.
