Gridiron Dutchmen drop October opener at Pacific

PACIFIC — Putting the month of September in the rear view mirror, Dustin Howard’s Owensville Dutchmen football team looked to open the October portion of their season on a winning note with a win on the road at Pacific against the Indians.

Scoring first, the orange and black had the early momentum and a 7-0 lead.

Allowing Pacific to score on all four of their first-half drives, Owensville eventually surrendered 62 unanswered points before a late Ricky Marquez touchdown made the final score 62-14 in Pacific’s favor.

“We started the game with a touchdown on our first drive, after that, our offense struggled to find a rhythm the rest of the night,” Howard said. “We try to put players in the right positions to be successful and it just didn’t go our way tonight.”

Getting the ball first, Owensville needed just four plays to put the ball in the end zone on a 57-yard touchdown run from senior Zaiden Gates at the 9:58 mark of the first quarter. Lex Moseler’s extra point put the orange and black on top 7-0 two minutes into the game.

Even with a Henry Loeb sack early in Pacific’s first drive, Owensville’s defense could not slow down the Indians before they got on the board at the 3:30 mark of the first quarter on a Seth Stack to Trey Kulick 4-yard TD pass. Kade Collins’ extra point tied the game at 7-7.

Later in the quarter after an Owensville punt, Stack hooked up with Cameron Dixon on a 31-yard TD pass for a 14-7 lead through one quarter after Collins’ latest kick.

After another Owensville punt from Andrew Budnik, Pacific went back to the air on a Stack to Kulick 14-yard TD strike with 9:59 until halftime making the Dutchmen deficit 21-7 after another Collins kick.

Making a push into Indian territory after benefiting from an offsides penalty on Pacific, Owensville found themselves in yet another punting situation with 5:48 until halftime.

Even with a Jaden Gerlemann sack, Pacific still managed to find the end zone again on a Colton Kossuth 4-yard TD run in the closing seconds of the first half giving them a 28-7 halftime lead.

Seeing Pacific score five more touchdowns in the second half, Owensville finally broke the string of 62 unanswered points on a Ricky Marquez 13-yard TD run with 1:14 remaining in the fourth quarter. Moseler’s kick made the final score 62-14.

Of Owensville’s 149 yards rushing as a team, Gates accounted for 63 of them on one carry for a touchdown.

Marquez finished with 35 yards rushing on two carries and a score while Kien Bayless and Logan Bailey each ran for 25 yards on four and seven carries respectively.

Bailey was Owensville’s leading receiver catching two passes for 45 yards.

Wilson went 8-18 passing for 93 yards through the air and two interceptions.

Defensively, Chase Crosby and Gates led the Dutchmen with seven total tackles each.

With 0-6 Union coming to Dutchmen Field Friday night, most would say this is Owensville’s best chance at putting their first notch in the win column with road trips to Sullivan and St. Clair awaiting the Dutchmen during the final two weeks of the regular season.
