Second-quarter touchdown thwarts Hermann shutout bid

Trailing 28-0 midway through the second quarter of Gasconade County Bowl football action Friday night at Dutchmen Field, Owensville looked to go into halftime with any kind of momentum against Hermann’s Bearcats.

Capping a drive that went 60 yards in 11 plays, Dutchmen junior quarterback Adam Wilson found a wide open Steven Buddemeyer in the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown pas with 53.3 ticks until halftime.

Owensville’s ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed leaving them trailing 28-6 at halftime.

Two second-half touchdowns by the Bearcats left Owensville on the wrong end of a 41-6 final score.

“We were simply outplayed by a good football team tonight,” OHS head football coach Dustin Howard said. “Hermann played very well in all three phases of the game and we showed flashes but still have plenty of work to do.”

Prior to Buddemeyer’s touchdown, Owensville’s first first down of the game came on a Wilson to Logan Bailey 13-yard pass completion late in the opening quarter.

Before that first down, Hermann got scores on a Henry Allebach to Aiden Eikermann 20-yard TD pass and a 5-yard TD run out of Cole Traub.

Allebach also found Traub on a 76-yard TD pass early in the second quarter to give Hermann a 21-0 lead after ending the first quarter with a 15-0 advantage.

Hermann’s final score of the first half came on a 32-yard TD run from Eikermann.

Trent Chasteen’s extra point kick gave the Bearcats a 28-0 lead with 5:30 for the second quarter.

Two plays into Owensville’s next drive, Wilson found Chase Crosby on a 21-yard pass play moving the Dutchmen into Bearcat territory for the first time in the game.

Later in the drive, Wilson found Crosby on a 12-yard completion and Gates on a 24-yard pass play setting them up with first-and-goal at the Hermann six-yard line.

Facing fourth-and-goal from the three after Hermann was whistled for offsides, Wilson found Buddemeyer for Owensville’s lone score of the game.

Just over two minutes into the second half, Allebach and Eikermann connected again on a 20-yard TD pass giving Hermann a 35-6 lead after Chasteen’s latest extra point.

At the midway point of the fourth quarter, Tyler Woodle scored from 45 yards away for Hermann’s final points of the game.

Before Hermann’s final touchdown, Wilson had pass completions of 13 yards to Crosby and 20 yards to Gates before Owensville eventually turned the ball over on downs.

Official statistics from Owensville were not available at press time.

Now 0-5 on the season, Howard’s Dutchmen will play three of their next four games on the road beginning this Friday night at Pacific against the Indians with a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Caden Humphrey led Hermann on the ground with 57 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Allebach was 16-24 passing for 269 yards through the air and three touchdowns.

Traub led Bearcat receivers with two catches for 95 yards and a touchdown.

Chase Romig and Traub also recovered fumbles on defense for Hermann.

Romig also led the Bearcat defense with 11 total tackles while Kegin Sperry also recorded nine total tackles.

Looking to go to 6-0 on the season, Hermann will host Sullivan’s Eagles Friday night for their homecoming at Bearcat Memorial Stadium.
