OHS advances 13 athletes to state track

PARIS — Another week of practice.

Matt Candrl’s Owensville High School track and field athletes would earn it with a top-four finish Saturday during their respective events at one of four Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 3 sectional track meets at Paris High School.

It did not take long for Owensville to punch their first ticket to state.

Junior Eli Graham not only won a sectional title in the boys discus with a mark of 46.83 meters (153 feet, 7.75 inches), he also broke the old school record of 151-04 from 1995 previously held by John Brune.

Brune is now an assistant football and track coach at Francis Howell High School.

“It’s about time someone broke the record,” Brune said via a post on X Saturday afternoon. “Congrats to him and best of luck at state where he’ll hopefully break it again.”

Shortly after that, OHS punched state tickets in two more events.

Placing third in a time of 10:26.84 was the Dutchgirl 4x800m relay team of Ilene Limberg, Brynn Wright, Abbie Gibson and Hannah Gehlert.

“Our 4x800m relay girls ran solid splits doing what they needed to do to advance to the state meet,” Candrl said.

Before she starts her playing days as a Columbia College Women’s basketball player, Dutchgirl senior Emma Daniels will have a few more races to run during this weekend’s MSHSAA Track and Field Championships at the Dennis and Roberta Licklider Track Complex inside Jefferson City High School’s Adkins Stadium.

Punching the first of her three tickets to Jefferson City, Daniels placed third in the girls 100m dash with a time of 12.81.

Later in the meet, Daniels also placed third in the 200m dash in a time of 26.50.

“Emma had to do work today in order to advance to state,” Candrl said. “She was also able to help the 4x100m relay girls advance to the state meet.”

Junior distance runner Ilene Limberg will have two chances to add a state medal in track to her state medal in cross country from this fall.

Limberg placed third in the girls 1600m run with a time of 5:26.96 while also posting a fourth-place time of 12:04.57 in the girls 3200m run.

“Ilene has done her homework all season and will get a chance to be able to earn a state medal this year in both cross country and track,” Candrl said.

Sprinting their way to state in the girls 4x100m relay was the Dutchgirl foursome of Emma Daniels, Ali Daniels, Cameron Nowack and Emma-lee Wehmeyer in a third-place time of 51.94.

Joining Graham on the boys side at state for Owensville will be Landon Losch who posted a fourth-place time of 15.75 in the boys 110m hurdles.

That made him the seventh Dutchmen hurdler to break 16 seconds in the boys 110m hurdles in school history.

“Landon has come a long way since the beginning of the season,” Candrl said. “We knew coming in that he would have to go under 16 seconds to give him a chance at state and he was able to do that.”

Wright also placed sixth in the girls 800m run in a time of 2:31.28 while Wehmeyer posted a sixth-place time of 17.02 in the girls 100m hurdles and a seventh-place time of 54.31 in the girls 300m hurdles.

Just missing sectionals in the girls 4x200m relay with a fifth-place time of 1:49.26 was the Dutchgirl foursome of Emma Daniels, Ali Daniels, Cameron Nowack and Makenzi Carpenter.

Ending the meet with a seventh-place time in the girls 4x400m relay was the Dutchgirl foursome of Mckenzy Echols, Ali Daniels, Wright, Limberg.

Ruvia Nowack ended her junior season placing seventh in the pole vault with a clearing height of 2.74m.

Ali Daniels (7th, 4.69m) and Cameron Nowack (8th, 4.69m) placed seventh and eighth respectively in the girls long jump while Nowack also posted a seventh-place leap of 10.12m in the girls triple jump.

Looking to end his OHS track career at state, senior Felix Guerrero missed it by two seconds with a fifth-place time of 4:35.60.

Losch (5th, 42.72) and Johannes Berg (6th, 44.33) both competed for Owensville in the boys 300m hurdles.

Sprinting to a sixth-place time of 45.56 in the boys 4x100m relay was the Dutchmen quartet of Connor Wellman, Isaiah Gates, Ricky Marquez and Berg.

Also placing eighth in the boys 4x400m relay with a time of 3:42.15 was the team of Ethan Harris, Chase Crosby, Guerrero and Berg.

Crosby also placed seventh in the boys high jump clearing 1.77m while Trenton Million just missed state in the boys pole vault clearing 3.95m to finish fifth.

Along with his sectional title in the boys discus, Graham placed fifth in the boys shot put with a throw of 13.69m to go along with a seventh-place mark of 44.30m in the boys javelin.
